Default f-150 . 01 expert

i developed a whining noise after taking a trip. suspect low level fluid in rear axle. i'm older,haven't done one of these in decades. can someone tell me where the filler plug is located? procedure? how to ? etc. can't afford to go the dealership, garage route.

1. Put and catch pan under the rear diff and pull the cover off of the back of the differential, should be 10 or 12 bolts. This will drain it. Make sure to clean the old RTV off the cover and the Diff.

2. Install the cover with either high temp RTV or a new gasket. Allow to dry if using RTV. I prefer RTV.

3. The plug is on the front upper, Driverside of the diff, uses a 3/8 ratched to remove. Refill with 3 quarts of 75w 140. If it has a limited slip add one tube of friction modifier.

If it a 2WD it does not have a limited slip.
