Default Dreaded P0345 Code

My son in laws 2011 f150 5.0 threw this code. it’s making ratting noise won’t half run. I read the code and it also said 5,6,7,8 cyl misfires. He had cam position sensors replaced on that bank to no avail. Now shop is telling him that it’s the timing chain system needs replacing.
Is this an accurate assessment?
Could the VVT solenoids on that bank cause this issue? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

No warning? How many miles on it? Any idea how well/not well it was serviced ? He'd never had any slap/rattle on cold starts?

See, that’s the kinda stuff we need to know.

The “dreaded” part is really the P0012/P0022 part. He’s gonna need a timing job and I sincerely doubt it was a sudden thing-he told you that, but it’s not.

I do know it has been run low on oil, because i stayed on him about checking it! It will halfway run but there rattling sound coming from the engine. I wasnt sure if the VVT solenoids could cause all those issues.
Has around 150000 miles.
