Differential, T-case, and Front Diff Fluid change Intervals?
Hello everyone, I have a 2005 FX4 with the 9.75" rear end and I am looking in to changing the fluids in the rear end, transfer case and front axle. The truck has about 54,000 miles and the maintenance guide ford has says they are lubed for life but I'm not sure about that. Any suggestions on when it should be done and what the best fluid is to use? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi, I just had my rear differential lube changed at 125k. My truck is a 1997 F150 with a limited slip differential. I noticed the pumpkin was seeping fluid and there was a shudder noted on pull out turning left or right. Really noticed it at low speeds. Figured it was the rear end low on fluid. I talked to the Ford dealer and the service rep said if you are using the truck for towing you can change it every 30k . If you have a shop or a place to do the work and some basic tools it isn't hard to do yourself. The rear end uses a synthetic lube and you will need to add a friction modifier. The Ford dealer strongly recommends after you scrape off the old gasket material that you use a solvent to clean the two metal surfaces where the silicone gasket material is applied you need the type that will leave no type of residue or the silicone wont bond to the metal. Some people like to use a regular gasket but the dealer said it is not specified that the silicone in a tube is all u need. I prob would have done my own work if I had a nice warm garage, would have saved a nice chunk of change.
