I can't actually say I'd really recommend 'replacing' it. Perhaps one of the other (smarter) members will chime in with their recommendation.
Unfortunately, you can't know it needs to be cleaned until you take a look-see. Fortunately on the 2wd, it's quiet easy. Mine had several pieces / slivers of broken guide jammed in there pretty good. But I was able to pick it all out and flush the junk out and reinstall it. Main thing in my view is: Make DAMN sure the 'O'ring at the oil pump end is GOOD, NOT damaged, and SEALS or pump will be slow to build oil pressure.
