75 dual battery setup
The truck has one battery tray on either side of the radiator. i was wondering if there was any help on what to do with it. i don't want to blow it sky high with too many volts.
also the points plate appears to be loose.

Good idea i agree, just make sure the wiring is right. I don't know if you can just drop the extra battery in, makes sense if you could. the alternator, battery and starter shuold be all in parallel with each other. Just make sure the alternator can handle charging both. It probably was put in for an auxillary hydralic pump for plowing or electric winch setup.
Unless your into off roading or plan on adding a bunch of power draining items to your truck stick to one battery. As far as your points plate being loose, there are rebuilt kits available but most people opt to go with a rebuilt unit. Do your research when selecting a reman unit, some companies just clean up a used unit while some actually replace all the working parts if the unit-mechanical and electrical.
if the plate is worn, the bushings are probably shot too. do yourself a favor and spend the money on new drop in distributor. the last one i bought from summitracing.com was $140.

i think it is partly due to the open air filter, the radiator is blowing right at it. maybe i need to find a regular stock one that gets air off the side of the engine compartment.
