'02 F-150 4x2 Supercrew front end noise
I'm in the middle of a holiday trip, and once I got to the colder climate, I'm hearing a loud "bang" or "clunk" when I go over road bumps coming from the front end. The truck has 78000 miles and has had no problems - I've kept it regularly maintained and don't use it for heavy duty towing or other rough work (yet). Is anyone aware of issues on front end suspensions on 4x2 trucks? (I plan to take it to Ford tomorrow morning to have it checked out, but I'm looking for any experience before I show up there asking for a big tab!

ball joints most likely, I was quoted 500 for all four. If you want to doo it yourself, its about 200, because the top ball joints are part of the upper controll arm. It might be different on a 2x4, Mine is a 4x4

Turns out that 90% of the noise was due to antisway bar end bushings, as the first responder suggested. They took it down, repacked, and replaced/tightened them and most of the noise is gone. There is still a light "clunk" over big bumps (speed bumps, at slow speed). He seemed to know what it was immediately, and when I added that it was worse in cold weather, that seemed to clinch it for him. $80 for the repair - not bad. When I get home, I'll have the other clunk checked into.

didn't wait
I didn't wait to get home. I went back the day after Christmas and had them relook at it. The technician put it up on the rack, tightened the antisway bar end links, and "showed them the grease gun;" He could not replicate the clunk sound, so he picked me up and we toured around some parking lot speed bumps - totally silent. They charged me a half hour labor, and I drove back to my daughter's, and on the way heard 2 clunks on fairly large bumps. So, it's significantly better. He told me the first fix was packing the frame bushings, and the 2nd was tightening the end links. He did let me know my idler arm was nearing the need to be replaced, so this could be part of the problem. All else looked good, he said. So, that's the end of the story so far.

workin for parts!!!
yep, the truck never acts up with the dealer riding along. glad you got some more of it figgered out. it only seems to be doing it when going over a bump, so that tells me suspension problem. no chance a front coil has moved in it's bucket?
