Default 02 F150 - rusted bed - alternatives to replacing bed

This truck I just bought has some rust holes inside the bed, and if you walk up in the bed its soft in a lot of areas (obviously). I've found a few decent beds at Pull-a-part ive considered swapping, but then I'll have to paint. Has anyone ever put an aluminum plate over your existing bed? I'd rather not have to seperate the sides from the bed (the sides are in great shape), so I was thinking maybe just buying a .25 or .50 inch aluminum plate and laying over the existing bed, and just run the bolts through... Anyone done this, or have advice? Its the short 5.5 ft bed that comes on the supercrew model, 2002 xlt

Cut out the rust, weld or pop rivet in some patches, toss in a plastic bed liner and drive on.
