Default Wiper problem

This just started about two weeks ago. Took it in for the 25,000 maintenance and they couldn't duplicate the problem (of course)
Wipers won't work on anything except HIGH, and also the washer won't work... funny thing is it will sometimes start working, and almost always starts working if you turn the truck off and back on, or the Auto-Stop-Start kicks in at a stoplight.

Any ideas? Anyone else having issues like this?

Matt

initial thought sounds like a issues in your column wiring or the wiper stalk itself. Those commands are now CAN Buss signals that pass though the clockspring connector (slip ring, airbag connector - it goes by a few names)

anyway it's not just push button - trigger relay - spin pump motor (or wiper motor on level 3, etc etc)

Can module in the steering wheel column and stalk - send a coded USB like data string to the Body controller which starts the pump or th wiper etc.

I would still check the fuses and the one relay (wipers have a larger relay) as they can be faulty too. IE relay works one moment - doesn't the next. Solid state relays are much better but not 100% perfect.

However since both are trigger off the stalk and though the steering column that's my first guess.

Curious - has it done this for more than a few months - does it get worse in the rain (I know only time you'd run the wipers . . . )

Nope.. just started the last week of May - right before I took the truck on a 2800 mile trip for my honeymoon. I noticed it trying to wipe morning dew off the windshield or pressing the washer to get the bugs off...

Sounds like the Column Switch the fact that you lost the Washers as well as Wiper Functions or maybe the Clock Spring as mentioned under the Steering Wheel Cover

Put it in the local Ford shop - they claim they replaced a switch and 'fixed it' however they didn't. Called them to let them know, and told them I needed to get it back in there, but I would definitely need a loaner vehicle - they said they would call me back, never did. I called them back and it was like 'who are you?' - done with them... very unprofessional when I took it in the first time, so I won't be back again.

Drove the hour back to the dealership I bought it from.. they are investigating the issue, and I'm driving my daughter's Toyota Yaris... I sure hope they get it fixed and I can have it back soon, I feel kind of like a sardine in a can..

Will keep you posted on what they find

GOod luck

and I'll restate we really need to start a thread for bad dealer service or something. It's getting ridiculous. OH and I also agree we would have the other thread for excellent dealer service. IT goes both ways.

I hate that line "we couldn't replicate it" so much. It sucks but it sounds like possible wiring issue.

They say they have it narrowed down to a faulty Steering Control Module - and are ordering the part to replace it and hopefully, I will have my truck back by mid-week... and stop getting the weird looks in my daughter's car. I guess a big bearded guy driving a tiny Yaris looks funny.

So I went to pick my truck up Saturday morning - dealership is an hour away - Service manager says it's all done, I sign the paper and walk out with my keys. Start the truck, try the wipers/washer.. nothing. Turn the truck off and walk back in. He says what's wrong, I said they aren't working again. He says no way!
Walks to the truck with me starts it up, tries them... nothing.
He immediately drives it back to the service bay and gets one of his technicians on it right away. We waited for about an hour and a half when finally he came back and said they found the culprit. The plastic piece on the end of the wire connections. Wasn't holding one pin in when plugging it back in. So instead of having to order that piece and make me drive my truck back again, the technician is coming to my house this week and fixing it in my driveway! (he lives here in the same town)

Now.. that's customer service!! And hopefully, the little chunk of plastic will actually be the fix...
