Windshield Star Crack
Received a gift from the roadway yesterday in the form of rock that left a quarter size 4 point star crack in the center of the windshield. I have USAA Insurance on this 2016 and have yet to check it.
Anyone dealt with this size crack by having it remediated by one of those quick repairs? Not sure what I'd be out of pocket for this tripe of repair but probably do something soon before it spreads. I'd hate to need an entire OEM replacement.

Yep. Fix it quickly.
Had the same and it spread to about 14 inches before I could get it home. Checked a repair place and they said the length of about a dollar bill could only be fixed, anything more would need a replacement.
I have a 500 dollar deductible and safelite gave me a new OEM one installed for 375.

Insurance coverage varies depending on your policy. A few states mandate free glass replacement. Some policies offer zero deductible glass as separate from comprehensive, Depends on your policy. Before a loss is the right time to ask this question of your insurance company. Most insurance companies will attempt a repair for free. Call them.
I have USAA and they told me I have no coverage that is like the "free repair" thing I heard about. It's "full" coverage, so they would obviously repair or replace it, but I would burn through my deductible first. My Acura has a small chip, maybe a quarter inch across, but it's been that way for over a year and it doesn't bother me. And there is a lot of chatter--not really good--about Safelite across the google-sphere. I can't remember what it was, but when I looked into my windshield issue I got the feeling I should stay away from them. Look into that.

Right, there is no "free repair" coverage. When you contact some insurance companies and describe the damage, some of them offer a free repair attempt. They send you to a repair shop THEY pick out, and that shop tries to repair the crack. The reason for this is that they don't want to replace the windshield if they don't have to, so they'd rather pay out $75 than $400. No deductible applies to the repair attempt.
If the repair fails, then you make a claim. If it works, you go on.
Repairs are generally for rock strikes, not for visible cracks. They fill the spot with a compound under pressure, and let it sit for a period.

Get the repair done ASAP.
I waited 2 extra days and the chip to turn into a nasty crack that spans across 3/4 of the windshield's length.
I got 3 more chips in a few weeks. I'm afraid that the day I get it fixed, ill get hit by a rock again.
There is no road salt on alberta roads, but lots of gravel. Also, a lot of trucks working oil & gas industry, driving all day on gravel roads and get on the highway to move between sites....
I'm pretty sure the windshields are thin and cheap, probably to save on weight. Status quo until i get a notification to fix.

You can go to Safelite's website and do it all online to include your insurance information.
