Safelite does not make sturdier windshields. And any glass company can buy windshields from Safelite if you're wanting a safelite windshield but if it were me I would stick with the carlite (OEM), pilkington or PPG glass...I just don't think safelite's quality is as good. Better than the chinese stuff but not by much.

If you dont want the acoustic interlayer (soundscreen) you can usually request it not to be there but I've never heard any concrete proof it makes the windshield weaker. If you go that route stick with Pilkington or PPG.

Wife's uncle owns a fairly large glass company and I used to work for him - I've seen my share of windshields...

FYI just had a conversation with wife's uncle - the one who owns the glass company - and Safelite is actually getting out of glass manufacturing...and from what I hear they are using mostly chinese glass now. It's not unsafe just the quality sucks.

Plus they are crazy expensive. Find a reputable local glass company and request USA made glass. Safelite is like the WalMart of glass companies. And not in a good way. Walmart at least is cheap. No offense to anyone who has had their windshield replaced by them and had a good experience just prefer to deal locally if I can get something done cheaper and with a better quality part.

16k miles on mine (Lariat) and only 3-4 micro-chips ... way too small and shallow to fill. Not any better/worse than previous vehicles i owned. But yeah - if you are unlucky and a gravel stone hits the windshield at 50-60mph+ .... any glass will crack

When my Insurance had safelite replace multiple windshields on my 11 they always ordered Ford Factory glass with the black section behind the mirror that said Ford on it. Last one was replaced moths ago before I got my 16.

Unless they were full of it and and told me that while others made the glass with the ford name up there.

So far no issues here with non sound screen glass.

If they got the ones with the ford or f150 logo on it, it's a carlite part. They are the only one that can put that on their windshields.

On that range of years you could get the windshield with or without the acoustic interlayer (soundscreen) - some of the trim levels had it and others did not.

I'm sure there's a non-acoustic part out there - but I don't know whether or not carlite makes it on the new ones. For some reason I thought all of the new (15+) trucks came with the soundscreen glass.

Maybe on the XL only they skipped the sound screen as my 16 XL does not have the same windshield as the 17 XLT loaner I had last month.

The loaner had it printed on the glass in the lower left where mine has no writing to signify it has a sound screen.

I dont care for the soundscreen feature of noise reduction.
Safelite took three times to get the correct glass because I don't have the LKS but do have the front camera for auto hi-beams (502A) package. They ended up replacing with the same OE Soundscreen.
