Windshield already cracked on my 16'

Hi,
I did a quick search for a windshield thread first....

a simple and small rock chip, nothing to it. I was planning to get it fixed within 2 days, but it started splitting. right in my field of view, so cops will give me a ticket or a 48 hours notice.

My old 1993 never had an issue with rock chips, even when I was living in the sub-arctic region (lots of gravel on the road).

Is the soundscreen windshield the only option? is it really a "soundproofing" item? Is there such thing as a better/thicker windshield? How much am I looking at to get that stuff replaced?
I'm afraid that with my luck, ill get another stone chip on the new one soon, I do a lot of highway driving...
I won't claim thru insurance.

There are non ford windshields that aren't "soundscreen". I can't imagine soundscreen cracking easier than any other glass. There's a chip in my fusions soundscreen i still haven't had fixed, it's never cracked. Been a year or better.

Could be a fluke.

I noticed a small crack (1" or so) on the passenger side bottom of my wife's 2002 Xterra one winter. I don't know how long it had been there but probably not very long.

The defroster was running full blast.

Less than a mile later, it had spread to the driver side top. Once they start cracking, it grows quickly.

Maybe your new sound screen windshield made the rock sound smaller than it was....

Replaced mine last September. $600.00 with $100.00 deductible.

I actually had to bring mine into the windshield replace shop again today. Second time this year, first one was back in June a couple of weeks after first buying it. I talked to the guy today and he said the glass is a lot thinner because when Ford looked at ways to reduce weight of vehicle for better mpg they shaved off as much weight as possible. Made sense to me. I'm not sure how much weight was saved, but I will say the window cracks very easily and seems pretty weak.

Just did this two weeks ago. Called around to several places and got quotes from $460-$650. Obviously I went with $460 installed soundscreen. Did some looking for a replacement option too and found some folks saying they could tell the noise difference between soundscreen and not. I figured it wasn't worth the risk.

This time of year is worse in colder climates. As with the salt stones put down, as well as the salt breaking down the pavement on the highways!

Man these windshields sound expensive. In the past 7 yrs of driving a tundra I replaced the windshield 3x for $100 each. First one was for 4 chips in it before replacing. Second one I punched it (back in my college days and meant to hit the dash but went too far). Third one was a rock the size of Moby Dick and split the windshield immediately.

Havent had any troubles with the F150 yet though it's only been 7 months so far.

1 good thing about Florida. 1 free windshield replacement a year. Least with full coverage insurance. Insurance was only billed like $360 installed for a sound screen
