I'll likely be turning mine into state farm in the next week or so whenever I have time in my schedule. Gt a crack about a foot long starting. It won't stop I'm sure.

What's the difference between OEM and aftermarket. If it fits, doesn't leak, and makes no road noise does it matter ?

Worth a shot but my jeeps windshield was covered for the first year and 12k miles. Was replaced with oem under warranty for free.

Well you won't know until it's installed and do you think insurance is going to pay for a 2nd window due to noise.

You can ask to see it before they install it, and yes if there is road noise the shop will replace/fix it if they are halfway reputable.

And this was my point. We had a windshield replaces on our Fusion. Lots of wind and road noise. Called the company and they were back the next day to fix it no questions asked.

That's why I was wondering what was so special about OEM ? I'm just wondering. I see a Ford logo at the top of mine now, can't see it from the outside anyhow, and I don't care if it is there or not. Some kind of label on it saying "SoundScreen" or some such. What does that mean, or is it just a name ? Does anyone know for sure ?

Aftermarket glass can be of lower quality, ie thinner, wavy once your look through it, also it probably wouldnt be soundscreen because that is a carlite specific thing. Its two pieces of glass sandwiched between a vinyl sheet. Roll down your front windows and feel the edge of the glass, its also soundscreen.

It wouldn't leak or make noise though because it would have to be the size of the oem glass to fix, leaking or noise would most likely be a installation error.

there's more to changing a windshield than just the glass. the bonding agent is just as important. next time, try supporting your local glass shop over a national (non American) company. don't let your insurance company bully you into using who they want. you pay the insurance, you decide who fixes it.

Here in MA, all auto glass is covered under "comprehensive" coverage. No deductible or out-of-pocket expense.

Curious if other states don't have this?? Why are any of you guys having to pay for a replacement windshield?

Well, I talked to my insurance company. It's my choice who and what to use. They work through Safelite, or I can use a local shop. I chose Safelite. Within 30 minutes they called me and scheduled an appointment to come to me at my office or work and change on my timeline. They wanted to know if I had lane assist or SoundScreen. Sounds like it will be OEM or at least equal to it.

Sounds like it all comes down to the company you chose for the replacement. If they know what they are doing you'll be fine.

I've tried 2 different local owned shops and been more impressed with safelite this last time than either of them by far.
