I did legal 35% ceramic on the front windows and over all the colored glass. I wasn't happy with that darkness in the front so I took the front off and illegally went to 20%. I also have 35% ceramic on the sunroof and 80% ceramic on the entire windshield.
a lot of great information here.
I am thinking of doing a light tint on the rear and back doors, then match the front doors to that.
I asked a few LEO's and they claim they do not pull over for tint alone. I travel mostly at night so not like it would be a reason to get stopped.
I did somethign simlar to that - I put 50% on my back doors and back window and tinted the drivers and passenger windows at 20%.
It's a little lighter in the front than the back so if you wanted a little closer match you could go with 15% on the fronts (driver/passenger)
The other option would be to get one of the "clear" type tints - they are typically in the 75-85% VLT so visually don't block a lot of light but you still get the 99% UV rejection and it does cut down on heat as well...
One thing to be noted is the manufacturer does matter...if you're getting a USA made film they are almost all very good...Llumar...3M..madico..etc
They all have different lines - a basic line, a metallized line, ceramic line - they get progressively more expensive - but all will be good.
What to avoid would be the $99 tint job - you're probably getting cheap korean film - which if you've seen people who have their car windows tinted and it's purple or turned clear that's what it is. Reason being is the dye in their film is not color stable - the yellow dye breaks down in the sun over time leaving you with only red/blue (thus purple)...you won't be able to tell until 6 months of sitting in the sun later it's minnesota vikings colored...and the only way to get rid of it is stripping the old tint off and retinting it.
Another thing to keep in mind as far as legality. Some states (NY in particular) are checking the window tint during their annual vehicle inspections. In NY, you will not pass the inspection if you're out of spec. You'll have to remove the tint and get re-inspected to pass. This just went into effect in 2017.

I've been snagged a few times in Texas for that. Happened earlier last year in my Ram. I didn't even touch the tint, it was sold to me like that. I failed by like 4%, it was dumb.
Here in Arizona we can tint our front windows to 35% and the side and back you can go as dark as you would like, I personally left the rear windows alone, so they have exactly what the factory has on them, so that way they match the front a little better. I have know a few people that have went so far as to tint the rear windows to the limo 5% tint that wwe have available here in Arizona.

Does putting 20% on the smoked rears make them darker than the non smoked 20% fronts? In other words, what's the best combo to have everything match, regardless of law? I am photophobic so I have a medical exemption for tint.
