Please reword your post, makes no sense as posted. .

And in some cases with vehicles today, you pay for things built into the vehicle, but don`t get to actually use them if you don`t pay a subscription fee, eg. heated seats/steering wheel, adaptive headlights, auto start etc.

It should be a free upgrade because the system is a $XX .xx option.
Because this is The Age Of Entitlement.

As those who have a GPS mentioned they get free updates because it's built into the price. Same with a smart phone the "free app" is paid for someplace along the line.
Is Garmin's marketing strategy. Garmin bought their map database years ago. Almost got blocked by the government out of fear of Garmin having a monopoly. Garmin maintains their map data. Is Garmin marketing strategy to add value to their product with free updates.

Google harvests metadata from your phone. That is the only reason why they created Android, to have a spy knowing where you go to sell to advertisers and target you online.

Yes, I believe the car / truck industry will evolve to 'pay for services' inside your auto. I'm old enough to remember when the big thing about pay tv, ie cable. You'll never have to watch a commercial. Greed, Greed, Greed.

In my Gen12 F150 the Nav system used an SD card.

Back then, if I wanted to update the Nav map data, I was required to order and pay for (buy) the new updates on a new sd card.
Now... I never did but why would this be an unreasonable request?

Whats different now? Because its just software? Its invisible? Its a download?

I don't recall anyone complaining back then that they had to pay for this update.

Should ford haver sent us all the updated card for free? I don't think so...but thats just me!

After 2014 the Sync updates were USB thumb drive files. I downloaded the Ford file to a thumb-drive (it required a 8gb capacity) and proceeded with the in vehicle update, that took over 30 minutes of vehicle running time to accomplish, simple, kludgy, and worked best with a robust internet connection/bandwidth to download, but free in 2020. Ford also offered a thumb-drive with the upgrade pre-installed for just under $100. Considering the cost of the option package to get navigation, I can understand the update/subscription cost complaints. Understanding the update situation I ordered my F150 without Nav, largely due to having used aftermarket GPS for many years. It's nearing time to update my wife's Sync again and I will use the Cyan Labs solution. KM

My first vehicle with onboard nav was a 2004 Grand Cherokee that ran the nav on a DVD, displayed on a monocolor 4" screen. Voice directions were better than on my F150. Its major disadvantage was not having real-time traffic. Update DVDs were $200 at the dealer, but could usually find them for about $50 on Ebay. I got new DVDs a couple times.

It's funny how wrapped up people get about the updates. Very little on the map changes on a local basis from year to year. Most owners could easily skip several years of nav updates and probably not notice any relevent changes in their travels. Sync updates seem to be mostly about minor aesthetic tweeks and fixing bugs that were introduced in previous updates. There's really no reason to be in a hurry to get them, or be worried about not being able to afford a nav update every year.
