Default Wheel Question

I have a 2017 F150 FX4 with the 6-spoke, 20" wheels shown below (not my actual wheel). The areas I've highlighted below appear to be discolored on my wheels. On every spoke where it meets the outer edge of the wheel and where the spoke meets the hub, the wheel color is darker. It looks like the top coat of color (charcoal) was applied poorly and did not fully cover the undercoat/primer. The finish is smooth. It doesn't appear that anything has etched or pitted the wheel. I've tried to take a pic of my actual wheel but lighting and shadows keep me from getting anything that will accurately display the issue. The issue is on every spoke area, of all 4 wheels but is not consistent on any area or wheel. The size of the discoloration may be 1 sq.in. on one spoke and may extended 1.5"-2" on another spoke.

Does anyone else with these wheels have coloring like I'm describing? I'm trying to determine if it is supposed to be like this or if there is a problem. I bought the truck used with about 22,500 miles on it. Thanks in advance for your help!

Those wheels bubble from under the clear coat and will eventually peel. Every person I know with those wheels have done it.

Mine still look new. Even the one that had to be repainted due to an accidental scratching with less than 1000 miles.

this shows the discoloring. The clear coat is perfectly smooth. It’s definitely underneath the clear.

Still have warranty? This might be a power train cover as well (5 year)

Might as well try with your dealer?

Yes...Still under warranty and I plan to check with the dealer. Since I bought the truck used I didn't know if the wheels came like this or not. Just trying to determine if others have the same problem or if they're all the same then maybe it was by design (which I doubt).

Thanks!

Almost looks like mold build up underneath the clear, weird.

As has already been pointed out, this is an extremely common problem with these wheels. Which sucks because this is the best looking OEM F150 wheel that Ford has made in years IMO. I've had two different sets that had this issue. Neither of mine got to the point of peeling but I have read that sometimes it does. I have also read that owners have had the wheels replaced under warranty but I personally would not expect it to be covered under power train as it is strictly cosmetic. Bumper to bumper, I would say yes. Power train, I say no chance. I've researched more than a fair amount on the issue and have yet to see an even semi-conclusive cause.

I just got back from my dealer and showing them these spots on the wheels. He claims to have never seen that before. I don't know if he has or not, but he is submitting a claim with Ford warranty to get them replaced along with one of my running boards as the clear coat on it is peeling really bad. They are going to fix it under warranty for me. I'll let you know how it goes.
