Now that we know this is dealing with the front of the cab, I can tell you that it is a 'reinforcement pad'. Part of the structural integrity of the aluminum metal structure in that area. Has to do with heat expansion. This, according to the repair manual.

I’ve done six of these swaps and this is the first one I’ve seen. Even on a 16 and 17 model.
