What do I do with the key?
OP: I'll take this opportunity to ask you to learn how to start your truck when the FOB battery dies.
Seach youtube for something like "starting f150 with dead key fob battery".
You'll see videos of where to place the dead FOB for vehicle to be started.
OK, so if the extra key I have is for the spare tire, it should be with the truck, always. But if I want to lock the console... Or the glove box... It would not do well to leave it in the truck, and should be on the ring with the fob.
What good does a fob do if you have to still carry a key? And what does my wife carry when she uses her Fob? And I have a missing mystery key for the cleats?
Yeah, me thinks this was not the best plan. Good job Ford!

How do you suggest to lock the glove box or console? Add electric motors to it like the rest of the doors?
I should add that key to my truck (didn't even consider using it for the rear as the one IN the FOB works for that).
Why do you need to carry box link keys? Lock the link in place, toss the key in the truck and carry on. Is somebody going to break into your truck just to see if the box link keys are in there to steal the box link bits?
So far you've described what is an issue to you and have blamed Ford but have not offered what you think is a fix?
Easy solution for YOU is to remove the plug from the spare tire holder so you don't need a key to access the port then you can leave the key at home.
Is your wife capable of changing a tire? Not implying she isn't capable, but am asking since you brought it up.
You could leave the metal key in the truck and lock the console (on rare/random occasions) and lock it with the key inside your FOB. If you lock the console often, then yes, that would be inconvenient to open the FOB all the time.

Yes, add little servos like my 2015 BMW motorcycle. Hit 1 button, everything locks, hit another, unlocks. All 4 places. You can use a key also.
Box link? Well, once I get some keys, I'll leave them in the console.
Wife change a tire? As likely as I am... Impatient, out of cell service, but yeah, fully able. When the auto service gets there though, they are going to ask for the key. I don't know, but pulling apart a fob seem silly. A flip out key makes more sense.
At least now I know, since the dealer didn't show me, and the manual doesn't spell it out clearly. Though, I am still going through the main manual, will get to the supplemental shortly.

order cleat keys on eBay. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F222863537784
This is super helpful, thank you!
Sorry you woke up on the wrong side of the bed man, I never understand why people on forums need to leave snotty responses. If I think a question is dumb, I usually move on.

You were complaining a lot about how Ford screwed up but offered nothing as what would be better.
I offered a few suggestions how to get around the shortcomings that don't work well for you.
You read it in a tone that was negative, apparently, since it's the internet and text and everybody yells at each other.
I never said your question was dumb, but you were doing nothing but complaining about how dumb it was.
You're right....why Ford decided to put a baby key in the FOB is beyond me. Never seen anything like that.
It's not very easy to turn the key when unlocking the door (at least on the 2016 it isn't).
See, this is where us poor folks who drive XLs are better of with our fobs with switchblade keys, seeing as we don't have to deal with the issue of a separate key. Well, I do, because I have an upfitter console with lockable compartments, but that's a separate issue.
I don't have to deal with a separate key either. It stays at home. I also don't have to deal with digging a key out of my pocket. I used to doubt the usefulness of the FOB, but once you've owned a vehicle with one you'll never want to own another without.
