Default Vacillating over wheel size

So my 2019 f-150 xl came with the 20 inch aluminum wheels but my goal is to improve it's off road capability. 17 inch wheels are as small as I can get over the brake discs but will I run into problems with contacting the suspension? I consider having more sidewall an advantage but the whole offset vs backspacing has my head reeling. How should I measure what I need to avoid buying two or three times?

17s were a stock wheel size. Just order a wheel with the same offset and be done with it. Same for the tire size.

Raptors are 34mm offset in a 17x8.5 rim, so you can add more wheel towards the shock (0.90" with the Raptor wheels), but you cannot go with as wide of a tire as the Raptor or you will hit the fender. Check out the various Raptor wheels on non-Raptor threads to see what is being run. Ford stocked mine (non-Raptor) with 275/65R18.

rim and tire calculator

offset and backspace

A couple of good references. Base OEM size wheel is 17-7.5 44mm offset 6 on 135mm bolt pattern. KM

I had to look up that fancy word in your thread title. My Mississippi education failed to provide that word and it's meaning apparently.

I'm running a 17x8.5 with a +1 offset and clear the suspension with 285/75/17s. For lift I have bilstein 5100s set at 2.1". I had to spread the front and rear crash bars, and have no rub.
