That said, I always see these types of things hauled on trailers.

I saw something like that picture above in a pickup bed just last week.

They truck had some sort of extension on it, I believe it was inserted into the receiver. The platform was quite a large contraption, as wide as the truck bed and maybe 3' deep?
The thing in the truck along with the platform was quite an eye-catcher.
I don't know how much they weigh but if they come in around 1500lbs, changes are it's about at the maximum weight your truck will safely handle.

I think the truck was a Dodge, not sure why I can't remember but I believe it was a 3/4 ton.

 

you're problem is that the tailgate will take a beating. then it won't open close. trailer is better.

 

Over 8’ long, just get a small trailer.

Technically I think you could fit it in there, its not a good idea though as everyone else has said, get a small trailer.

 

So an 8' 10" long thing doesn't fit in a 5'6" bed? Or a 6'6" bed?

But since it is wider than the bed, does the length matter? 🤔
