Default Using E85 in the 5.0

Who here has done this and what are your results?

from what I gather, an increase in power and a decrease in mpg. Wondering if the offset of the cheaper price offsets the lessened mpg.

Around here, E85 is about .30 or better a gallon cheaper than 87. 93 around here can be .75 or better more expensive than 87. I know we run 87 but when tuned on a 93 tune this could make a substantial savings to run E85 instead of 93.

I know these stations are far and few but we have a new one not far from me and with a 36 gal tank, this might be something to consider.

By typing into Google this line: site:f150forum.com e85 you will find over 1,200 posts about this.

In short - E85 needs to be about 30% cheaper than 87 to account for the drop in MPG you will get (people say 4, 5-7...). And, if it's cold, E85 often can have problems.

I don't know that anyone compared a 93 tune with E85 and did the math, but if you the impact on MPG of using the 93 tune vs. 87 without a tune you could then do the math.

On previous trucks I have found you need about 50-60 cents a gallon cheaper than 87 to make it worth while. And never in the winter

I don't know about the 5.0 but my 2.7 says no more than 20% ethanol. Personally even if I could use E85 I wouldn't! no matter the price difference. I've seen what it can do to gas pumps that are made for E85.

flex fuel only vehicles, hence the 5.0 in the post

Now going the other way...

Does anyone occasionally use 89 or 93 without a tune? Any advantage for towing or hauling? Just curious.

I run 93 in mine right now with gas so cheap. Towing I can tell a difference and even not towing I can tell. It holds the gears better on hills and has more pep with 93. I have run e85 before and the extra power is not worth the way worse mileage.

I have not noticed any difference with from 87 to 89 to 93. I do get better mileage using non ethanol gas. There again didn't notice any difference from 87 to 90 on the non ethanol.

Hrrmmm... I think either way I'm going to stay with 87 for the foreseeable future. I'm barely halfway to 1000 miles so I think I ought to wait until its "broken in" before I start experimenting.
