Default USB connection not functional

I recently purchased a 2018 F-150 Lariat SCrew. Everything works great except one thing I didn't check before I bought it was if Android Auto was working. I plugged in my phone and nothing happened. It didn't show as connected and it wasn't charging. AA doesn't show up in the general settings either but it seems like some say it won't show up until a phone is connected. Then I realiized there was an update available on Sync 3. I couldn't get it to update over WiFi so I tried to update with a USB drive but nothing happened. Then I left the flash drive in for my 45 minute commute and nothing happened.

Then I checked the fuse for the USB hub (fuse 58 "USB smart charger") and it was good and the hub lights up although I believe the lights are powered seperately.

I've removed and unplugged the USB hub and plugged my phone directly to the USB mini connector with a mini to USB C adapter to bypass the hub and my phone still doesn't connect and shows no charging power.

Is there anything I've overlooked or should check? Is there a different fuse I should check besides the one marked for "USB smart charger"?

All other functions related to Sync3 appear to be working properly and the current software version is build 19205.

Thanks in advance for any help at all.

Edited to add since I forgot to mention, I've done several master resets and I've also tried disconnecting the battery for several minutes.

Replace the USB hub module. Can be acquired for ~$60. I had audio drop-outs/skips over Apple Carplay, and I tried everything to no avail. I broke down and bought a new USB module/hub, and I haven't had any issues since.

Edit: I guess I could've gone to my dealer, but I didn't want the hassle. I was also afraid of the dealer either taking apart the center console or scratching it up.

Thanks for the suggestion, but shouldn't it work for testing purposes if I bypass the the hub module? I removed the hub module completely and connected directly to the USB mini connector that connects to the hub and it still didn't work. I'd be happy to spend $60 to fix it, I just don't want to spend it if that's not the issue.

The hub is an interface with a chipset in it, you can't just bypass it it and plug directly into the Mini USB cable to test.

Thank you so much, this is a huge help! I'll get one ordered and report back. Do you happen to know the correct part number? Mine is marked as HC3T-14F014-AC, but when I search for it on tasca it says "no results found".

Nevermind, it looks like the correct part# according to parts.ford.com is HC3Z-19A387-H.

Actually you can test it that way. It should see and charge the phone connected directly to the APIM with the correct connector.
@~kyle sounds like either the cable is bad, not plugged into the apim or the apim usb is bad.

Ugh! That's what I was afraid of originally.

I guess I need to see if I can cancel my order for a USB hub. When you say that the APIM USB may be bad, I'm assuming that would mean I would need to have the APIM replaced. I wouldn't think it would be repairable.

I'm also assuming that's something that wouldn't be covered under the powertrain warranty. Is that something I could change out myself or would it require programming from the dealer?

I'd be surprised if it were the cable, just trying to figure out worse case scenario.

If it is the physical USB on the APIM, its probably time to replace the APIM. Never know if someone was in the dash messing around though. I would definitely take things apart to make sure the cable is plugged into the APIM before doing anything else.

Thank you sir. I'll check the connection first for sure. I guess it will be good practice for me if I have to change out the APIM.

@jm061 Thank you so much for your advice! I finally got some time to take the dash apart this morning and when I pulled out the screen and APIM I looked at the back and sure enough, the USB cable was unplugged on the back of the unit. I couldn't believe it! I plugged it back in, plugged my phone into the USB hub, and it instantly connected. So I put everything back together, plugged in my USB drive with the update on it and updated SYNC.

I was all set to buy a new APIM, in fact I started to just go ahead and buy one so I wouldn't have to tear into the dash a second time (turns out it's not that big of a deal to get to after all).

Anyway, I just wanted to give an update and say thanks for your help. I know a lot of times people post problems on these forums and never come back and share what the issue ended up being or how they resolved it.

This really made my weekend!
