Default The truth about bolt on power upgrades ?

I know many people have varying opinions about bolt on power upgrades. But I'm wondering if anyone has actually tested any of them. The manufacturers web sites state they dyno a piece of equipment and it gets X horsepower boost. So what is the truth.

Air intakes ?
Exhaust ?
Larger throttle body?
Larger CAC ?

Anyone have any real numbers ?

i have an afe dry intake and have had a borla exhaust since he was at about 2500 miles. sounds good, feels peppier, but not concerned enough to get him dynoed. i did notice a nice mpg boost since i put in the intake. was at 7.4 in my normal take the kid to school day. went up to 11.6 with the intake. and crazily went up to 13.2 when i got it leveled. freeway avg was 22.2. after level and intake.

Wondering myself, with dyno results to back them-up. Thanks!

I'd love to do these mods! If they really work.

I have the Roush intake and they claim something like 27HP/26 ft.lbs with it alone. A bit tough to swallow but the guy on the phone claimed it was tested and that's what it showed. I don't really feel it.

Didn't notice a change in MPG because I do a lot of stop and go driving and my mileage sucks as is. My driving habits definitely don't help either.

Assume you'll be changing little more than your exhaust note.

Look at the F150 ecoboost forum (www.f150.ecoboost.net) in the Performance Section and they have some "stickys" on dyno and CAI gains

A custom tune will do more for these engines than any bolt on - one bolt on by itself is a waste of money IMO - but a tune combined with an intake, exhaust. etc should net even better power gains.

Even then with them claiming roughly +30rwhp within the power curve with a tune, it's debatable how much you'd be able to feel the difference from stock, in an F150 especially...

I'm over here just trying to put away a few pesos a month saving for that Whipple package sometime down the road

That mpg gain won't be from intake. Either you started driving it differently after install or different gas etc. would be awesome if they had gains that good but not realistic.

You will very seldom get the real story about an awfully lot of aftermarket products. They are out there to sell products, not to tell the real truth about them. If you want to spend a lot of money on sometimes useless upgrades that your prerogative but in a lot of cases they are unnecessary for the most part.
