Default Trans problem

A couple of times in the last week when I stopped the transmission wouldn't down shift. It would stick in 4th gear...it was always 4th gear. I turned the truck off, turned it back on, and it shifted normally. It didn't do that all the time. Hadn't done it in 2 days. I also noticed a clunking sound when it would go from 3rd to 4th gear. It didn't do it every time, but I did hear it a couple of times. Today I turned off of a side road...had been doing about 35 to 40...onto a highway where the speed limit is 65. When the gears got to 4th gear, it started to shift erratically...up to 6th, down to 3rd, to first, then back up to 5th...like that. I pull over, turn the truck off, restart, give it another go. I noticed it shifted fine until it shifted from 3rd to 4th, then the problem started again. I tried that several times to no avail. Somewhere in there the "wrench" popped up on the dash, and from that point it would shift fine to 3rd gear, but go no further. I even tried manually shifting and that did nothing. Drive it down some side roads home at 35 to 40mph. RPMs got up to over 2K, but wouldn't shift up at all. Get home, grab other vehicle, take back off. Get home several hours later, get code reader out, no codes. Wrench is gone as well. How could it have done all of that and not left any codes? I haven't driven it again to see if the problem reoccurs. I might try that tomorrow. I did do the lead frame replacement about 35K miles ago. Is it the lead frame again?

2016, V8, 89K miles, 6 speed.

Sounds like the classic lead frame issue, unfortunately.

No this doesn't sound like lead frame, this sounds more like limp mode from a bad throttlebody. Classis lead frame issue is downshifting into 1st or 2nd while going down the highway

It should still be under warranty from the last one...I think. Last time it took 6 months to get it fixed.

there’s always more symptoms. These aren’t the typical or “classic” symptoms though. I’ve had this issue myself and it’s not uncommon

I mentioned I had done the lead frame before. That time it gave off codes IIRC. I don't remember the codes, but seem to recall some codes. This time no codes.

That's what a failed lead frame would do before the software update to the failure mode. Post software update upon lead frame failure the transmission goes into limp mode and sticks in one gear until the truck is power cycled, then it returns to normal.

Good afternoon. Are you experiencing issues with your F-150's transmission? If so, please send over a private message with your VIN and dealer info so I can look into this concern on my end.
