Default Trailer Brake Controller upgrade

Hi everyone

Need to install a TBC. have a couple of questions. I have a 2018 Lariet 2.7. See the original window sticker below for how it came in terms of packages. I am not going to be towing much, a few times a year.

Should I stay with a ford OEM product - or go aftermarket.?
What do I need to order for my truck, given the packages it has. Am I just looking at the controller module or do I need more? ( I checked the fuse and Its in place thank god for this)
I can easily install the controller if its just opening a few panels and its plug and play. Will any dealer enable the FORESCAN settings or should i expect them to be difficult about doing this part. Will this void any warrenties?

thanks

OEM and install yourself, will still need Forscan to activate the controller. The dealer will charge 1/2 to 1 hr labor or find someone near you that has Forscan software.

IMO, the Ford ITBC is superior to aftermarket as it also integrates ABS into trailer brake behavior. The development involved Tekonsha in some manner.

Fully agree with post replies above. I installed the OEM one and I'm glad I did. It's a bit more work to get at it in trucks like yours with the center console but it's not too bad. All you need to order is the brake controller itself.

Here's a quick video that shows you what interior trim pieces you have to remove on trucks with the center console to get the brake controller into it's hole:

Dealers don't use FORScan... They use IDS.

I have a Tekonsha P3 aftermarket controller (moved over from my previous truck), and it works fine without any Forscanning. It doesn't sound like it's quite as fully-featured as the OEM controller, though. If I was buying one, I'd probably go OEM, too, but a good aftermarket controller will work, too.

I can’t tell from your window sticker but if you don’t already have this plug you’ll need to add it along with the harness. Install is easy the hardest part is cutting the plastic on the bumper for the plug.

Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate the responses and link to video. I will tackle this myself.

I have a hard time getting any information from the dealers in terms of pricing today.

@where'dwhogo - I have the 7 / 4 pin connector form your image installed already - so I hope that's good to do!

I will order the part - thanks guys

Nice, then the brake controller and changes in ForScan should be all you need.

I think If you have the 7 pin in the back you can just get the factory one. I bought one from fairway ford on eBay for $96 dealers wants $146 and the dealer was going to charge me $125 to program. But my front differential died at 3000 miles and I had a rough sale so they are doing program free. Trying to get my review up
