The TPMS tool is cheap anyway. I bought mine for $39 on Fleabay.

I just swapped my studs on today, and I still have to reprogram them, but it’s easy.

Just drive it for 15-20 minutes, then turn on the key without starting it, click the emergency flasher button 6 times, the display will say to train LF, so I start at the LF, put the tool by each valve stem, push the butto;, and after the horn chirps go around the pickup clockwise until you have all 4.

Think about what an enormous liability that would be on Ford if anyone could jump in and start your truck while you were outside or you were doing something in the back seat like vacuuming or cleaning and your kid got up front and started it. The system has four proximity sensors according to the factory service manual, not just the console. I don't want to derail this thread anymore so this will be my last comment on this issue. While its true the manual does not specify a specific distance your own manual quote contradicts yourself as you said you can start it holding the fob outside. From the manual:

Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) - Overview

2015 F-150

The PATS deters the vehicle from theft by preventing the vehicle from starting unless a valid programmed key is detected inside the vehicle when the START/STOP button is pressed.

If you truly can start your truck with the fob outside I would suggest you make an appointment to get it fixed.
So basically you are saying you were wrong about the 1" from the driver seat only thing. You might want to go ahead and schedule that appointment.... And your right, it is a liability issue that manufacturers have struggled with. There have been cases(not necessarily an F150) of people starting their vehicle with the key sitting on a workbench in their garage next to their car a leaving. Once they arrive at their destination they have no key to restart the vehicle.

EDIT: You are correct about more than one antenna. There is a front and a rear antenna as far as starting is concerned. One in the center console, one above the rear window glass. Evidently, if you leave one of them unplugged(I speak from experience) the truck will not start regardless of where you place the key.. The key must be within approximately 3 feet of one of these two sensors. The fact that I can hold my key outside the truck is certainly pushing the limits, though it does have a clear unobstructed shot. The fact that your key won't work in the cup holder a few inches from the antenna seems like far more reason for concern.

I'm pretty sure the cheap Ford TPMS tool won't work on 15 and up sensors, at least that is what the dealer told me the info listed in the ads for most of them confirms it.

I needed the tool for my 2017 Transit, is the F150 TPMS all that much different? On my Transit, it is looking for the address of the TPMS, and not happy until trained.

Well then that dealer lied to you and you bit. My "cheap" Ford TPMS tool worked a charm on my 2018 XLT when I changed wheels.

Don't know what to tell you. I have two sets of rims. When I change them the set I put on are being read by the time I get home. Have never used a tool or the re learn process.

Have changed back and forth 4-5 times now. As noted there are many others like myself.

Don't bother wasting your time, he's never wrong and will just argue no matter what facts you present until you just give up. You are right the one I have for my 2007 Mustang works on the F150 too. I used it the first time I did a rotation before I new it would learn itself. Part # on mine is 8C2T-1A203-AB.

Do you know which one you used? Every one I looked at showed for models earlier than 15. I have several Bartec TPMS tools, so it wasn't a big deal. I was just looking for something small to throw in the glovebox.

Right... Says the guy who wants to argue that your truck isn't supposed to start unless the key is within 1" of the drivers seat... I would LOVE to know what FACTS you presented to prove that ridiculous story.
