Default Towing Electrical Question

This MAY be covered somewhere, but I can't seem to find it in a search or in docs....

IF- I have my 2016 Limited running, and plug in my 7pin trailer plug, everything works EXCEPT for the Battery Charge line. And... no warnings on the dash.

IF- I have the trunk OFF, and plug in the trailer, then START the truck, all seems to be fine. All lights work and there is 12v to the trailer batteries (break-away and interior lights)

Is this some secret handshake thing??!

FYI- I've looked at the schematics and the TRM doesn't seem to have any adjustments, settings or troubleshooting. So...... hummmmmm.....

I think that's right. The 12V may also start when you put the truck in gear. The 12V also has limited current. Just enough to charge the breakaway battery and not house loads. There is at least one thread where this is discussed but I don't know where it is.
The previous gen trucks work conventionally.

In my case, I'm just wanting to keep the break away up to snuff, and also a battery that runs interior lights and wireless cameras. LOW draw that rarely gets used.

On the current limit- I found this video----

I had not thought of putting it in gear. I'll check that. It just bugs me that the behavior isn't defined anywhere I can see.

I have not towed an RV trailer yet but I am glad the 2011 is normal.
That video looks like a good solution.

I believe you will have to add a trailer to the computer system AND plug in the trailer. You will then have power but as you said will be limited

i just got this from another forum----
"As near as I can tell and for reasons I don't clearly understand, the charge lead does not become active until the truck is sure a trailer is connected. That assurance apparently comes from the brake controller finding the trailer when the brake pedal is pushed or, I am assuming the controller is activated manually. Once that happens, the charge lead comes online. "

So.... likely pressing the brake will do it. Again... I'll be trying that in just a little bit.
