Just remember the Raptor got no crash bars to keep the front wheels from intruding into the cab in a crash.

I will drive the sedan for a little while until we are able to afford another vehicle, or Raptors get the V8 again, whichever comes first.

Good thinking.

Just keep in mind that an SUV isn't inherently safer than the sedan. There are road tests that show that SUVs are significantly more dangerous because you lose a lot of the ability to avoid an accident. You can't swerve as well as in a smaller sedan. They take longer to stop. They have longer runs between main structure points making them less safe in side impacts than a smaller vehicle, etc.

The most dangerous vehicle on the road for years for people in the vehicle was the Cadillac Escalade because it had so much distance between support pillars that a side impact was fatal in an incredibly high number of cases.

If you want her and the kids to be safe, you would get a minivan at best, or a mid-size or large sedan at least. A smaller SUV can also be good (Escape or maybe even an Edge). But as soon as you start getting into Explorer territory with a lot of weight, poor avoidance ability, longer braking distances, etc, you aren't doing them that many favors.

The best accident is the one you can avoid to begin with. It's human nature to think bigger means safer, but about the only accident where an SUV is safer is where your wife isn't paying attention and runs into the person in front of her. In basically every other scenario she and your kids are safer in basically anything else.

The new Chrysler Pacifica is pretty damn nice, and Chrysler is really dealing on them right now.

We ended up getting her a Pilot - basically an Odyssey without the sliding doors. Pacifica is very nice but wife didn't want another minivan - she drove one for almost a decade.

seriously. the insurance OWNS the truck now when it's declared a total loss. Any functioning part in the truck still has value and the insurance will sell the wreck...

That's great! Pilot definitely works. Where people get in trouble is when they get into that Tahoe territory, just massive, dumb, rolling weight.

Glad you are safe and enjoy the new vehicle, hopefully you will be back in a few years!
