Default Timing Chain

Well I am not a happy camper, 50K on a truck and now the front of the engine has to be torn off to replace timing chain. I just turned 10K on it.
Ref. TSB 15-0131. The dealer told me because the truck is new it may take some time to get the parts. I traded a Durango because the water pump went out a 12K. This truck has been back three times so far. 1. for sterring
shaft check, 2 for cruise control jamming on brakes when passing a truck, 3. for trans banging on downshift. I am starting to lose my faith in Ford.

It is a first model year and they find problems as more and more are sold. Are they fixing the problems?

I work in the medical MFG field and we test every new product to extreme. When we release it for sale is when it gets it's real test. The line changes the work flow changes finding better ways to make it. Even after all the testing and what not some problems show themselves.

Ford sends out a TSB saying if you have this symptom here is a fix. Sometimes they do a recall because it is serious enough to warrant it sometimes not. I am sure all MFG have problems when they first start up a line and those problems make it to consumers. It is how they handle the problems that tells the story of how good they are.

What are the symptoms and why does the chain need to be changed?

ISSUE:

Some 2011-2015 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 3.5L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engine and built on or before 5/29/2015 may exhibit a ticking/tapping or rattle type noise from the top front cover area of the engine upon initial start-up that may last for 2-5 seconds after a cold soak of six or more hours.

Yup thats it, put lasts longer than 5 seconds. The sound does go away though after engine is warm. I was not aware of the TSB . I thought it sounded like a lifter. The dealer told me about the TSB.

I had this issue in my 2011 3.5, I knew it was unresolved for the 2015 ecos with 3.5 as well.

My 2011 truck still run great it was just annoying for the first 2-3 seconds. When I traded it in, there was no tsb at that point for it.
That's why I got 2.7L eco this time around, hopefully eco V2 will be better.

If that is just an excuse then you can not use it as the reason for trading it in.

A "die hard Ford guy" would not have bought a Dodge Durango.

Just another example where pushrods, and 2 valves/cylinder, can't get the performance of a DOHC, 4 valve/cylinder engine.
