You are not.

Just lock it

About $200 worth if you have a quick dump source, or $800 if you put it on fleabay.

It's a bit more than a hose clamp, not that an aspirational thief couldn't just buy a McGard kit, but most thieves are opportunists.

If you think just locking it is a good solution, don't read up on how easy it is to get our remote codes and unlock modern vehicles.

Why are the weather strips in the roof channels clipped off like that at the factory? Mine are clipped off the same, except it's not warped upwards like that.

I never lock my vehicles by fob button when walking away from them, for this exact reason. I hit the lock button of the electric door locks on the door interior panel and shut the door. Returning, no choice but to fob it, but I'm driving away, so... but technically someone could still codegrab my unlock signal and get me some other time if they preserve it and see my truck again.

Probably about as hard as stealing the whole vehicle.

If they are coming that prepared, against a mass produced vehicle that's unattended, there's not much you can do regardless...a clamp on the tailgate won't stop them either

I figure the only thief I'm ever likely to deter is the opportunistic one looking for an easy, quick swipe. If I can slow him/her down for a few minutes, they'll most likely to move on to an easier target.

If a professional thief wants it, he/she will get it no matter what I do.

Luckily, in our area, tailgate thefts are incredibly rare, so I don't really worry about it.

Not sure how you missed the obvious choice.
