Tailgate won't open when truck is running?

I do not have to push the tailgate button twice, but the fob requires two *quick* presses under all circumstances, truck running or not. I'm thinking the double-press is a new (and less costly) approach to reduce or eliminate new complaints, that may not have been programmed into trucks that got the new connector installed in the tailgate. It's clearly a best method to avoid accidental tailgate openings, and my guess is that Ford will start requiring a fob double-press on new production and reprogram it into existing trucks as they get the chance. The dealership didn't even ask me if I was having problems, they just changed it (in December) and then told me it was changed.

I suspected a double press under all circumstances (button, fob, etc) would prevent the accidental opening if the issue was some rogue occasional electrical signal. So I am a bit surprised to hear the only change is on the fob. That was also not clear in the PDF.

I just checked again, to make sure I understood and am explaining it accurately. I tried with the truck off and locked, truck unlocked, truck on and fob inside, truck on and fob in my pocket at the tailgate. In each circumstance, one press on the tailgate button opened it, and 2 quick presses was required on the fob. Ford may know something we don't about the root cause of the tailgate random opening issue that explains the difference. It could also be a half fix, but it would seem they put a lot of thought into this issue.

Ok, thanks for verifying! You had the full update performed with new wiring harness modifications, relay, etc?

My 2020 Lariat F-150 just had the recall repair for unintended tailgate opening completed. I cannot get the tailgate to open when the vehicle is running, either with the Key Fob or the Button on the tailgate. I also cannot get the auto start/stop feature to work, the message is Vehicle is On - Electric Charging? Should I be able to open the tailgate when the vehicle is running? I recall I could before the repair? And could the rewiring job have introduced a current leak that affects the Auto Start/Stop functionality?
I had my tailgate fixed as well for the unintended opening issue. They put in a new button, re wired the harness and did a module update. Now my tailgate only opens when the truck is shut off.no power to the tailgate while it’s running. I also have a 20 F150. I m gonna take my truck back Monday to have it sorted out. I wonder if the module update just has to be re done and they can enable/disable tailgate opening features. Either that or they messed up some with wiring in the harness

Did someone mention that they were also enabling the "tailgate ajar" warning in the dash as part of the recall? I know it is there and can be enabled I am not sure why they wouldn't have it active.

Unless there were changes made (again) the 'tailgate ajar' switch was removed a year or two ago. It can be activated in Forscan if you install a switch to tell the computer that it is open. The wiring is still there in the harness. I set up a small micro switch that lets me know it is open, just 1/2 inch. I wanted to know if it unlatched but wouldn't fall due to my topper.

I could never figure out how the ajar switch was related to the accidental opening though.

It's not related to accidental opening but it is a visual indication that the tailgate is open. As someone else mentioned, the wiring and the functionality is there, it just needs the switch and software activation to work.
