Default Tailgate step not wanting to latch

I was getting into my truck bed last night and I went to shut the tailgate step and it took me having to slam it for it to latch. Any idea what can be the issue.?

It needs adjusted:

SSM 45307 - 2015 F-150 -Tailgate Step Pops Up While Driving, Binds While Extending And/Or A ReleaseButton That Sticks.

Some 2015 F-150 vehicles may exhibit a tailgatestep that pops up while driving, binds while extending and/or a release buttonthat sticks. The Workshop Manual (WSM) has been updated with improved tailgatestep adjustment procedures. Refer to WSM Section 501-04

Thanks for posting the adjustment procedure.

So far the only warranty done on my xlt was to replace a sticking tailgate step. Had to pry it up while pushing the button it stuck so bad.

At least they said they replaced it. Its better but pops up sluggish and doesn't pop up as high as others i've seen.
Gonna try that adjustment procedure when the weather warms up.

Often times the tech doesn't follow the procedure provided by Ford because it takes too long.

Follow the adjustment procedure as outlined without taking any shortcuts or skipping steps.

I know this is an old post, but for anybody else on the internet that is still searching for a solution I had the same problem with my 2016 F150 and found this video on YouTube and it solved my problem whereas the adjustment instructions mentioned in this forum did not solve my problem.

Best thing I ever did was trade my 16 that had it for my 19 that doesn't. Mine never worked right. It was always a pain to get out and get closed once you did get it out. I think I'd rather keep a step stool in my bed to pull out if I actually needed the step to get in.

I owned a 2002 Avalanche for 14 years and liked the corner bumper steps better than the tailgate step on my F-150.

That said, my step has worked without issue for 4+ years. I only use it when I know I will be getting in and out of the bed multiple times or if I am parked tailgate up on a steep hill.

No issues with mine on my 2014 or 2017. It has become a must have option for me on any truck I own in the future.

This video was very helpful. I had this problem.

I also had to adjust the wedged metal piece that the latch connects with. a crow bar and a little alignment sorted it out. seems to be working fine.
