Tailgate Step Delete
Looks like there is not a fix for the tailgate step rattle, outside of replacing the whole assembly for $1200.
Not doing that.
Outside of some mickey mouse band-aid to stop the rattle, the next option is to remove the step assembly, and replace the top plastic trim for a tailgate with no step, which is about $50.
Has anyone done this, or are there any stipulations that I need to be aware of?

I would assume you could just slap on the plastic trim but don't know for sure.
If it were me I would utilize the space for a tailgate storage system. You could fab up a drawer or something and keep your existing trim panel.
[edit] Oh right, you want to reduce rattle lol. Could employ some sound dampening I suppose.

I took my step out and replaced the plastic and fits perfectly.
Only problem is the tailgate has a helper bar inside it that let's the tailgate down easier then a tailgate with no step.
What I'm trying to say is my tailgate won't lay completely flat when it's open. It goes most the way and sits there bouncing up and down lol

If you just take out the step, the torsion bar would cause the tailgate to not stay down. And you would have to pull the tailgate open against that spring.
So you'll also need to remove the torsion bar if you want to ditch the step.
I'd try to address the rattle and keep the step.
