Default Tailgate step

Hey all,
I have a 2016 lariat without a step in the tailgate and I’d really like to have it. Is there any way I can purchase the step assembly and add it to my existing tailgate? I’m not very interested in the aftermarket options cause they don’t appeal to me as much as the one inside the tailgate.

thanks!

The step tailgate and regular tailgate are totally different on the inside. You would have to change the whole thing.

Find a tailgate in the same color as your truck and swap it out. You can’t retrofit the step into a tailgate that doesn’t have it.

I got a drop hitch step that just goes into the receiver. Can't use it when the tailgate is open, but most of the time I use the step just to get up high enough to grab something out of the back. Unless you actually have to get into the bed, it works just fine.

I think it was like 70 or 80 bucks.

There are several steps around that can be mounted to your tailgate. I think I saw them on etrailer.

Some that have them don't want them. Trade tailgates.

my seven year old climbs up and down the step constantly. If we go out he wants the tailgate down so he can climb in and out. I find it easier to just step up on the bumper and throw a leg over.

I had one of those previously, I used for camping. They are very unstable and a fall was just waiting to happen. I got rid of it. Can't imagine trying to hold stuff while balancing on that step, and then climbing from the step to the tailgate. The tailgate step support arm is just as important as the step itself.

There are after market tailgate steps with support arms but they mount directly through the sheet metal on the inside of the tailgate. Some metal isolators would have to be used so galvanic corrosion doesn't happen unless the screws and mounting areas are all galvanized really well with some added protection.
