I have this option and for the first week it was frozen and wouldn't deploy after depressing the button. It's 5 degrees here now so not hopeful.

Might be broke all mine have worked great snow ice nothing has interfered with it

Hasn't anyone with the new truck looked in their rear view mirror only to notice the tailgate step is ajar? Seems to be happening every day for me...

Only thing I could think of is hitting bumps but that kinda ridiculous.

I would try the dealer. That's not normal the latch must be worn or broken.
