Default Tailgate Mat Mounting Options

Unsuccessful search, so I'll ask here.

I bought the Black Armour bed mat for my new 2020 F150; now looking to add the tailgate mat.

The Back Armour tailgate mat for the 2009 - 2014 was discontinued but might fit the 2015 - 2020 tailgate.
It is sold as a simple rectangle without pre-drilled mounting holes and is heavy.

Question: Has anyone drilled into their tailgate to mount a mat? Being 1/2 thk rubber the Black Armour will be heavy and I don't know what options I have.
Also, my tailgate has the pull out step; so that adds to the complexity of drilling into the tailgate.

Thanks for any advice, Paul

I don't know why a tailgate needs a rubber mat. Most use a simple plastic cover that uses the existing hardware.

Is drilling into the tailgate really needed?? I don't have that exact mat, (I'm using bedrug), but why not attach it via 3M Industrial Tape?

I have a tailgate mat from Weathertech. Installed pretty easy and is tougher than I thought it would be. I had a wheel come off of a rolling tool box and the corner dug into the matt but didn't go all the way through. Pretty impressed.

WeatherTech is also my recommendation for a tailgate protector. WeatherTech was not my preference for a bed mat as I preferred the DeeZee mat, but the DeeZee option for the tailgate mat was the same thick drill-through mat that you described. The WeatherTech tailgate protector uses the tailgate service panel fasteners and has a plastic track that holds the rear edge (top of tailgate) of the protector down. The front edge (bottom of tailgate) is secured with velcro pads.
