Default Tailgate Ajar warning

I had posted this on general discussion and another user hinted it would be better if posted to the year based forum. Not sure how to remove old post.

My truck is new 2016 F150 Platinum, 702 package, 4x4 Off-road, max trailering.

I keep getting Tailgate Ajar warning everytime I start the truck. I checked multiple times even opening and closing the tailgate but the warning keeps popping up. I drove more than 3700 miles and the tailgate never fell open. But yet I keep getting this warning. Not sure what am I missing to check. Any help will be appreciated.

One user hinted at tailgate switch, not sure what does that mean and where would be that switch.

I'm not trying to be a d!ck here but if you don't know what/where those things are your best bet is a trip to the dealer. No reason to tinker with a $55k+ truck thats under warranty.

Don't worry you gave your honest opinion and I appreciate it. I am a person who wants to learn more about things I own and love to tinker with them even when they are under warranty. Some many not agree with me but I love to tinker with things I love.

Fair enough. I've never had one apart but chances are there is a switch, most likely internal to the tailgate on the latch, that tells the truck if the gate is open. That switch may be bad or could possibly be out of adjustment. Could also be a wire isn't connected. Removing the panel on the bed side of the tailgate would expose the inner workings. I would take a peek for a disconnected wire.

There are L-shaped bumpers on each side of the tailgate at the top, near the rim of the bed. Make sure those are oriented correctly and not interfering with the tailgate closing.

Dumb question: we have a '15 Lariat SuperCrew. I've had the tailgate open several times with the engine running and had no warning on the dash. In fact, I was thinking to myself that a warning about an open tailgate would be nice!! Am I missing something? Thanks Ken

I went out to mine last night because I didn't remember having that feature either.

there is a contact switch that is closed when the tail gate is closed...it may be either out of adjustment or bad...ensure good contact as stated above. you are under a bumper to bumper warranty from Ford...take it in and have them fix it....

Thanks!!

I'd love it if this were available as an add on "accessory" in the future ...
