Default Sync / Navigation update confusion

So, 2020 Lariat with Navi. Will I get sync3 wifi updates forever? (or as long as they update sync 3) Navi, will I keep my 'traffic' portion of Navi only 3 or 5 years, is it part of a subscription? Does navi update over wifi or should I download it?
Reason for questions, I see that I have an available Navi update, says only allowed once.. hmm. Currently on Sync 21194 and navi NA 2 20.
Anyone who can explain all this? much appreciated

Sync 3 updates.Sync 3 Nav updates. and Traffic updates are separate things, so don't get them confused. Sync 3 updates have been free from Ford since day one, and most likely will be for the lifetime of Sync 3. As an FYI, with Sync 4 in the newer model years, there probably won't be many Sync 3 updates anymore.

Sync 3 Nav updates are free or paid depending on how new the vehicle is. As you are seeing, you are probably entitled to the latest version for free because you have a 2020. Ford may have decided to give one free Nav update per vehicle, although I don't know that it was ever published previously quite how that worked. Whether it goes by one free update per vehicle, period, or by model year, I would probably plan on only getting one update for free. Navigation updates downloaded OTA for many last year when the NA20 map came out, however Ford may have changed their server/backend to no longer allow that. The NA21 update has only been out to the public for 4 days, so who knows if it will start coming down OTA for anybody.

Traffic updates come through SiriusXM. Last I heard it was free for 5 years, and is a separate cost from SiriusXM after that 5 years (eg subscribing to just SiriusXM radio does not grant that feature).

On my 2019, the SiriusXM Travel Link free subscription is for 5 years, after that it goes annual. I've gotten two Sync 3 updates for free - the 3.4 update, and the update that fixed 3.4. I got both the 2 20 and 2 21 navigation updates for free (the 2 20 map update was part of the Sync 3.4 update).

I doubt there will be any more Sync 3 updates. 3.4 looks good, works well, and Ford has moved on to Sync 4. I'm not sure why they even updated to 3.4 - the aesthetic and functional changes from 3.3 were both minimal. Then of course it created a problem with Travel Link they had to fix. If I were Ford I wouldn't spend any more time or money tinkering with Sync 3. I'm happy with 3.4 and if Ford offered another Sync 3 update, I probably wouldn't install it until after I read a lot of feedback on this forum indicating it didn't cause any problems for others.

my trucks currently in the shop having the APIM replaced as the 3.4 update from ford bricked it. So while its in the shop they are replacing the cam phaser thats been randomly acting up for the last 40k miles. at 96k miles of the 100k B2B extended warranty. shouldnt cost me but the $100 deductible.
hopefully the new APIM will be already loaded with latest maps and version.

We have a '19. I got the email that our Sync system was eligible for an update last week. I chose the free option, and I spent the 2 hrs letting it download and transferring it to a thumb drive. When I tried to load it into the truck, it said it wasn't compatible. I don't know why. Our truck is supposed to do wifi updates when we are in the driveway.

I also have a '19. I tried to update to 2 20 with a download and it didn't work so I sprang for the $47.50 key from Ford and it did. My last Sync 3.4 update was last September, it's at 21194, and I just checked on the wifi and it said it was up to date. I downloaded 2 21 and will try that tomorrow.

Check the Ford owner site. Register with your VIN and it will tell you if you are eligible for any updates.

Officially from Ford, I think so. But for my 2018 I updated to 3.4 with Cyanlabs and have no regrets. The newer UI is a small improvement.
