Sync 3 upgrade
I believe you need a different apim, which includes the screen. However, the ESN number will be different, and will not be associated with your vin number. That alone may not be an issue, until you try to update Sync or Nav software through legitimate venues.
You only need the APIM. You can buy them with and without the screen. You can buy a 2019 or 2020 that have 3.4 naturally, or you can buy an older unit and reformat the file system and then install 3.4 and the latest and greatest maps.
You will, of course, have to put your as build data into the new APIM. The only difference you need to make is when you put your current as build into it, you need to make sure the bit that says it is navigation is changed back. Other wise it will not show up as a nav unit. You can make a Nav unit non nav by changing the as build. You can NOT make a non nav unit Nav even though you can change the bit to enable it.
