Sync 3 update
My understanding is cyanlabs “hacks” or “unlocks” whatever module holds sync software and allows any 15-20 f150 to upgrade to sync 3.4 (provided you have the correct usb port). I updated for the new maps, it’s somewhat faster, and looks way more modern than the previous sync versions. I think fords website said mine could only go to 3.2 but this is a workaround

For example, I came across this link that shows some sync update info, but it seems incomplete and model specific. I also found the 'fordsyncforum' which seems to have some information, for example this link. I was just hoping to see a breakdown of the Sync 3 iterations to get a sense of whether it is worth my time. It appears Ford does not easily provide this kind of information.
For the most part, my current version works (Android Auto is a bit wonky at times, particularly with often having to set 'ringtone' to receive phone calls) and so I was considering an update.
Getting back to this thread, I’m not sure how, but it looks like I managed to update to SYNC 3.0 using the USB I downloaded from Ford. I spent about 45 minutes trying to install it before giving up, turning off the truck, and pulling the USB out. I don’t drive this truck daily, so about four days later, while heading to the shop, the screen displayed “downloading software” across the top. I didn’t think much of it, but when I arrived and turned off the truck, it was still showing the message. This happened a few more times, including once when my wife was with me, and I mentioned the strange behavior. When we got home, the message had disappeared. The next morning, I noticed I could turn on the heated steering wheel from the home display under the phone stats, like battery percentage. Checking the settings, I saw SYNC was updated to 3.0, but Ford’s site still showed 1.0. I connected to my office Wi-Fi, it synced with Ford, sent the download log, and now my Ford Pass shows I’m at 3.0. Go figure
