Default Sync 3 update - 2016 Lariat

I’ve got a new to me 2016 Lariat. It has Sync3 but it has never been updated. It still indicates I’m running Version 1.

so I set out on the mission of updating it.

connecting via WiFi didn’t work.

connecting to my personal hotspot via iPhone didn’t work.

Tried to download the files to USB on not one, not two, but THREE different laptops. The files would download but when I tried unzipping them I continuously get error messages and cannot create the required USB.

yes, I tried multiple USB drives and reformatted each time.

I called the local dealer who is happy to do this for me as long as I’m willing to fork out $150.

i called Ford directly and all they will send me is a USB to update the systems navigation.

frustrated would be an understatement.

so...any thoughts?
suggestions?

better yet, do any of you have a USB I could buy from you?

if you live in the Atlanta, GA area, I can meet you to get it.

i just want to be able to use Apple CarPlay.

Are you unzipping them directly to the flash drive or to your desktop first? I had issues where I had to unzip to my desktop first and them move the files to USB drive. Also make sure the USB has at least 32 GB (I used a 16GB and it worked the instructions say 32 GB I think).

Lastly in my 2016 I had to buy a new USB plug and replace the one currently in the truck to be able to use Apple CarPlay. Just food for thought.

i haven’t tried unpacking them to the desktop since the instructions say to unzip them to the USB. I’ll try that and see if it works.

yes, my USB was large enough.

i haven’t gotten far enough to test the USB plug in the truck but thanks for the heads up.

If your on version 1. Some have had to go to 2.2 first before the latest update. When we went to 2.2 there was some sort of file structure change

I have a copy if you need it

I’m going to try and unzip the files to my hard drive first as mentioned above. If that doesn’t work I may take you up on that offer. I’ll let you know soon.

Did you make sure when you formatted the USB drive that you selected ExFat?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you want to use Apple Carplay on your 2016 you're also going to have to upgrade your USB hub in the truck.

yep
if I have to spend $80 on that part I REALLY don’t want to spend $150 for software.

at that point I may as well buy an aftermarket system.

Who is bending you over for $80? You can get it cheaper than that.

Quick search on Amazon. Found it cheaper but even at $50 the total for having a dealer update the software and me installing the new hub comes to $200. May just spend a little more for a new system.
