Default Sync 2 to sync 3 upgrade

Hey guys I have a 15 f150 with sync 2, I'm thinking about upgrading to sync 3, are all the sync 3 units the same as far as wiring goes? I know mounting brackets will be different.

I assume you're referring to Sync 2 with MFT with the 8" screen.

The wiring to the USB hub is different as the USB hubs are not the same. 4D Tech sells adapter harnesses for the USB hub.

You do realize the displays are also not interchangeable?

Yes the 8in unit, I new the USB were different, and the unit is different as a whole but I was wonder if the plugs are the same or if they are wired differently, cause I didn't really want to pay what 4 d tech or infotainment wants for the conversion kit

Well, I have paid 4DTech for multiple Sync 2 to Sync 3 conversions. With the exception of the USB adapter harness, no other wiring modifications were required. The Sync 3 APIM and display was plug-n-play as far as the wiring harness connectors.

Just another reminder you will have to install a GPS antenna as the Sync 2 GPS antenna isn't compatible with Sync 3.

Unhappy Brackets

Is there anyone that has done this swap, I am about to do the swap and I got an apim from a Ford Edge. My problem is the brackets. I have spent enough money on this mod and refuse to pay 4D tech for there overpriced brackets. is there anyone that has modded a bracket from the 4.2 screen or from the Ford Edge Apim? If so please share pics. thanks in advance.

They dont fit, you need an SC screen from a f-series truck

Are you saying the screen or the bracket will not fit? I am using an SC screen. If you are saying the Bracket, I understand that they don't fit. I am asking if the brackets can be modified to fit? Has anyone done that or somehow modified the 4.2" screen brackets to fit.

I went from the 4.2" screen to the 8" sync 3 screen. I used a screen that has the recessed sides as opposed to the F150 screen with the flat sides, though I don't remember the part number. I fabricated my own brackets out of light duty aluminum angle like this. You can get it at most hardware stores. It took a bit of time because I didn't want a hack job even though you don't see them behind the bezel. I imagine the process would be much the same, if not a bit easier making brackets for a flat-sided screen.

I tried to find a way to modify the existing 4.2" screen brackets as well as the brackets that came with the new 8" screen, but the result would have been flimsy and it would have taken me just as long as making my own.

Thank You, Indy, exactly what I was looking for. funny enough I just purchased a very similar angled aluminum from Homedepot. So it's good to know I am heading in the right direction. Would you remember what the measurements were or the length of your cut? , Or would you have a picture of the finished bracket by some chance? If you have it, great I don't have to reinvent the wheel. if not at least I know I am headed in the right direction. Thanks again.
