Default Steering issues... ugh...

Ok so for the past month or so I’ve been getting this issue where turning left, as I let off on my grip of steering so it can start straightening out, it doesn’t move. It stays stuck in the same position until I rotate it back to the right. And recently I’ve started to notice that it feels like there this no power steering at all while driving and trying to change lanes. No warning signs, or different sounds nothing. Just happens all of a sudden. And I’m out of warranty of course. But gonna have to setup an appointment soon. Anyone else having this kind of issue? My vehicle is 2015 XLT around 37k on it.

I'd be worried about that being an EPAS issue... which has very few serviceable components and is not cheap to repair...

I have the exact same issue, down to the year and mileage. I told my dealership about it a few different times, they could never diagnose it but did record it in the system and assured me if it gets worse out of warranty it will still be covered. I've mainly just learned to deal with it since it's tough to duplicate.

How are your tires? Old worn tires can actually can actually cause issues like you're describing. Check the air pressure and make sure they are not too low.

I keep them inflated to 40psi. The do look a little worn but I rotate them every oil change.

Yes I have, the steering system failed completely on the way home from work, 75K, 2015. Its a known problem as the service guy says. Had to have the complete steering system replaced.
Mine started the same way, would jerk when turning hard, and seem a little stiff occasionally when driving. Progressed to intermittent failure during turns , then one day just completely failed.
It can be steered when that happens but it is extremely hard to turn the wheel. If it failed with the wife I know she would not have been able to trunk the wheel
I thought there was a notice of some sort about this but have yet to find a recall. Mine was covered by my ESP

If doing it on your dime I would look at the following.

1 - check the fuses in the EPAS system to ensure they are solid. I like to test them with a multimeter since I can't see all that well though the blue ones.
2) check or swap the relay on the EPAS system. YOu might have an intermittent relay which would cause power assist to stutter.
3) check the wires and harness condition - especially at the EPAS unit itself. pulled wires - or damaged covering etc.

ruling out all of that then you could check the steering input sensor but I don't recall if that is exterior to the new EPAS unit or not - might be built into the module today.

and then price out an EPAS unit for swap out. I think they are easy to change out but you might need forscan or IDS to re-Zero it after install.
