I assume you mean you are doing so within Android Auto and not just running Waze on your phone.

Not sure what's new about this...? Waze has displayed speed limits on a black on white "sign" icon in the lower left for months, if not more than a year now. It's pretty accurate, too.

Waze does not show the speed limit when linked with Android Auto...only when standalone on a mobile device.

FYI, Apple Maps on iOS11 now shows speed limits on Car Play.

My Sync 3 Navigation in my 17 does that too. I liked it when they added it to Waze, I wish we could set alert points at like 5 and 10 over to give a chime and a double chime to keep me in check.
