I love the way the 2017 Special Edition grills look with the red accents. Are those slats inserts or actually part of the grill. It would be so convenient if they were inserts to just buy and paint them lightning blue instead of having to replace my whole grill. Thanks in advance.

Maybe if my truck was college navy instead of lightning blue I'd think about doing green, would definitely stand out more, but then where would I stop, the door handles, other trim, etc? Go Hawks

True that, miss the Kaep and Harbaugh days when it used to be fun to hate on you guys. Hope it comes full circle for you guys.

 

But it's easy to hate on both those teams.

 

I have looked at this grille extensively. The red slats do remove but it's the whole black section behind the Ford logo. If you look real close you will notice that the 5 bar are a separate piece about halfway back. There are around 20 to 24 clips to release it. I have looked and that part is not a separate part. Anyway, that rear part of the grille the red slats are moulded to. I am thinking about adding it to my Ruby Red sport but keeping the black 5 bar slats and the painted surround.

 

No they do not remove. I will look again when I got home at lunch. However I never seen any clips or anything your mentioning. It was one of the things I looked at as well both before and after I swapped them.

I have a 2017 SE XLT, I swapped the Grill out for the Lariat one.

The slats do not come out there are just painted from what I seen. The Whole front grill where the slats are are just one giant piece of plastic. I am not sure what these 20-24 clips are you are refering to, I can only guess they are the active shutters? There were no clips I am aware of. The clips also do not show in the Ford Online manaul for your specific truck when you do an exploded view of the front end. I guess there could be something there, but perhaps they are plastic welded on. There was nothing removable though that I seen.

If you want to have them painted a certain color, I recommend getting the XLT special edition grill, then just painting that rather than trying to go over the red in the lariat. There is nothing special about the grill other than the shape and the color. It disassembled just like all other F150 grills and comes apart from the active shutters the same as well.

Yes I still have my XLT grill, no not selling it. I mounted it above my bar with the old blue Ford Logo. Sometimes I think about having the slats painted Ruby red to match. However the Color red on the slats match other red features in the Special edition.
