Kidding. I'm only sort of brand loyal. I've purchased Fords since I was 22 many years ago. Before that I was driving Ford vehicles before I bought my own. Parents had non Fords for a while, the vehicles I learned to drive with.
I had a GMC for 8 years before this F150. I didn't want the GMC but at the time it fit the bill. Now in my 3rd F150 since 1993 and only 4 trucks.

I couldn't care less what somebody else drives but the maturity level really shows when their 2nd post on a Ford forum is to tell somebody they like another brand.

I suppose I should register on a Dodge forum just so I can say how bad their large mirrors are, then never show up again?

As for IWE, there have been an unreasonable amount of failure, however here are people without a problem. I friend purchased a 2016 Platinum with 50,xxx miles a few months before before I got a 2016 Lariat with 64k. I think I've got an IWE issue, he doesn't even know what that is. The other newer F150 in my work lot have not reported issues either. My 2003 never had a problem with it either. Not sure if 2003 had vacuum operated hubs though like today's design. I believe they did.

I have had 2011 and my current 2012 F150 eco and never had a issue with my 4wd systems here in Michigan, my current 2012 has 157000 miles no issues with the 4wd auto system and has the original IWE`s with 2" level in the front.

No not at all.

It sounds to me that the person doing the repair is only fixing the problem and not fixing the cause of the problem. I would say you have a cracked vacuum line, bad check valve or bad solenoid which is causing the IWEs to fail.

The person may be telling you the noise you hear is an exhaust leak.

But he better not be telling you that is causing your hubs to fail.

Myself, they'd have to prove that to me.

The exhaust manifold was suggested as being the source of the grinding noise which I dismissed entirely. Apparently the service advisor didn't get the full story from the tech when she phoned me back, and later updated to indicate that the 4WD was still being diagnosed but the exhaust manifold was being replaced anyways. Good thing for the 100K powertrain warranty!

This is not making me happy 2018 F150. Purchased new. First winter I had the grinding noise sometimes when I first started and pulled forward. It would stop by the time I got 50 foot. I talked to the Ford Dealer they said comeback when it is recreateable. Grinding noise stopped. All good. Last week I took it in because my right hub went out. Drove it home. All good. 1/2 hour later drove it and the IWE noise was there. It would kick in and out. Called the dealer and have an appointment tomorrow morning. Based on this thread it sounds like I need to push to have the whole thing replaced to insure it is fixed. I am at 39K miles 3 mile out side the bump-to-bumper warranty. Still under the drive train warranty. Hope it does not turn into one of those ever ending issues.

They will do a test on the vacuum and engagement system. If it fails, the new TSB simply has the tech disconnect the vacuum hose and plug it and send the customer home. IWE problem is now fixed.

If you haven't had IWE issues prior to the work, it is plausible the IWE was installed incorrectly and is now damaged. Let them take a look. In the meantime, shift to 4a if you have it. If not, you can disconnect the electrical connection at the 4x4 vacuum solenoid.

Pretty cool that this post is exactly one year and one day old. Looks like it was a new thread at a glance.
I remember this one too, doesn't seem like it's been a year.

Yes the great engineered F'd fix by Ford. Basically ignore it now for the newer trucks because they are tired of throwing parts at it because they new models have a better PLASTIC IWE run by electric. They have basically abandoned previous model years.

I've considered manual locking hubs because changing vacuum actuated IWE's on my Lariat is a seasonal affair as frequent as changing batteries in my smoke detectors. What bothers me is that Ford makes an electronic locking diff and that it would be relatively inexpensive to have R&D design an electromagnetic hub based upon the same operating principles.
