Default To show you how speed affects MPG's....

Here's a trip I did from my house to my wife's aunt's house and back. I have 2 options to get there, a main highway road with a 100km/h (60 MPH) limit or a winding freeway through the city with more hills that is 80km/h (50 MPH). For this trip I took the slower 80KM/h freeway.

I've set my display settings to 'Merican.

Arriving at my destination (almost):

And then this is after I got home. I took two to show both ways. Must have had a tailwind on my way there

I cruised on average between 50-55 MPH depending on how thick the traffic was. This is also with winter tires, steel rims, and burning winter gas.

60-65 MPH is still ok but that's where it starts taking a dive. 75+ and it's gonna be crap. So far my lifetime average has been 22.2 MPG. I don't drive like a granny, and I'm aggressive when I need to be, otherwise, nobody will let you merge. Summertime I get consistently over 25 MPG and I do JUST over the speed limit to keep up with the majority of the traffic. I could care less about anyone passing me, I'm not in a race, and I'm rarely in a hurry because I always plan ahead and leave early to get places. Makes life easy, and I can just relax, put on my cruise control, listen to tunes and enjoy some good mileage

I wish...

55mph freeway is definitely the best for mpg, perfect speed, no stop & go... Whitemud is nice as long as you avoid "rush" hour (as much as rush hour you get in Edmonton...)

Am I missing something here? If you really wanted to make a scientific comparison to articulate the impact of speed on fuel mileage, you'd drive the exact same route under the exact same conditions, at the different speeds.

As it appears, you drove different routes at different speeds. That's a lot of variables. Not the least of which is that the route is 25% longer? Hills, wind direction, many other factors could be influencing your mileage as much if not more than your speed itself.

Or maybe I missed something that should've been obvious? I'm weird that way...

Wasn't meant to be scientific at all. Just posting mileage at lower speeds. Many people complain about not getting advertised speeds when they're going 70-75+ MPH. At 60-65 MPH I get 25-27 MPG. When I hit 70 I'm getting 24 or less. I still think that's pretty good for a SuperCrew 4x4...

How does a truck rated to only get 25mpg on its best day get 30 mpg?

Signed......

Confused F150 owner getting much lower MPG averages.

I assume the rating is at 60 mph and as I mentioned I did 50-55. However, I do consistently get 25+ in the summer doing 60-65 mph, usually 27 if it's not windy . In the city I get 18-21 mpg depending on traffic. I assume the same trip I originally posted would be much better in the summer with summer gas and summer tires.

I thought the highway rating was done at 48mph?

Yea something is not right there... I can get that kind of mileage going 45 ish on flat surface smooth roads with no wind. My average is 18.4 and our trucks are almost exactly the same.
Something is for sure NOT right..... but if you are really getting that then you sir have a UNICORN and I'd hold onto it forever.
