Should FORD make their own parts??
In light of the recent fire that is stopping the F-150, I was wondering if FORD should make their own parts, instead of outsourcing them.
It would appear to me, that "possibly" quality control, and changes in product could be handled better.
And yes, I realize the cost of starting a shop up to make them (the parts), would be huge, BUT, I would think having control would be worth something.
I hope the people that are/were affected by the shut down, return to work soon, and that the production lines start up soon!!!!
{Could you imagine the rantings if FORD got dis-placed from being the #1 selling truck!?!??!?}
Just my $0.02

So our trucks can cost as much as a clean one owner Ferrari? That will never happen. I go through a lot of auto and equipment manufacturers facilities from engineering to assembly. I can’t think of one that doesn’t outsource a lot of components. Of course certain parts are made in house but there’s a lot coming from outside.
They should have better quality control control standards and audits as well as dirversify vendors so they are not stuck when something happens to a vendor.

What he said. Without outsourcing I would hate to see the price of these trucks. It would probably take a few iterations of in-house production of a particular part before the quality is ironed out, and who wants to be a beta tester on stuff that’s supposed to already works correctly.

Because if Ford made their own parts, they'd never have a fire...????
They've already announced production resuming next week.

The number one reason they will never do this is the cost of paying human beings. Remember there Union, so they don’t have complete control over payroll costs. The idea of a union is great, but somewhere along the last 50 years the execution has gone south!

Unions reward the lowest productive employee the same rate the highest productive employee. Pay based on longevity and not merit is flawed. Unions have created the massive outsourcing that has/is happening in the US. Unions will never go merit based because it will lower the amount of employees. Lower employees, equals lower dues/revenue. Also, less votes!
Lets not forget the union is a business, with employees and overhead costs!
So no, Ford should not hire more employees and make there own parts.

No large scale auto manufacturer makes all of their own parts. None. They generally keep bodies, frames, and drivetrains in their court and a lot of other things are contracted out. Obviously, whoever makes the dash for the XL and XLT trucks sucks.
