Default Service intervals

why does ford say say something has a 100000 mile service interval when they know that is too long.

spArk plugs are about $60. The dealer has my truck for a warranty repair of a misfire and wants me to pay an extra $400 for them to change my spArk plugs and air filter.

My truck has 78k miles and I have a set of plugs and an air filter on my workbench waiting to go in with my next oil change. If the service interval for spark plugs said 60k or 30k I would have already changed them.

I really do not want to pay $300 labor for a 2 beer job.

Your free to change them as you wish, Ford's not stopping you. Changing them at 30 and then 60k will just cost you $400 each time based on your number.

Doesn't/shouldn't cost $400.

I've been flamed many a time for saying the service intervals, oil included are set out so long so they can claim their vehicle is less expensive to (service) own. Nothing short of a scam. Given the intervals posted in the manual the dealer is the first one to push more frequent service.

Just tell them you already have a set of plugs (and a filter) and you'll come by and install them yourself.

Unless the dealer found a problem, they are violating Ford's guidelines. In fact, in early 2017 a letter was sent to dealers telling them to stop doing this. If the misfire is caused by the spark plugs, or the spark plug has been fouled by the misfire, then that's a different perspective.

Note that while the spark plugs are 100,000 miles, the air filter is much more frequently than that as noted in the manual.

I do my own service because getting the truck to the dealer is a bigger hassle than doing it at home.

I use synthetic oil and change it every 6 to 7 k miles when it gets dark brown but before it turns black. The air filter gets changed every other oil change.

It only cost $60 for the parts and the time to drink 2 beers for me to change them at home. And I know it is done right. I already bought them and have them on my workbench with the rest of the stuff for my next service. Was planning to change them at 80k since the manual says 100k.

#%$& stealership.

If they said $200 the change the plugs while they were replacing bad coils under warranty then I would have said go ahead but $400 to change spark plugs and air filter on a 5.0 is a rip-off. That is over 300 labor for job that would take me less than 1 hour.

Love double talk. YOU have decided the AF should be changed more frequently than the manual says but say the dealer should stop recommending/doing any service the manual doesn't call for.

You can't have it both ways.

Reread his post. He stated that the manual says it is much more frequent for air filters than spark plugs. Different wording same meaning.
