They aren't rusting any more than previous years. Must be the 2015 buyers are a little more **** about it.

Hey folks,

I'm Crystal, I'll be here keeping an eye on things while Brittany is out of the office. If there's anything about your new truck that is concerning you (such as the surface rust that Pmarion mentioned above), your next step should be to bring it to the attention of your dealership as quickly as possible. They'll want to get it documented, diagnosed, and then recommend next steps from there. If you need me to step in and assist, just give me a shout via PM and I'll do what I can to help. All I need to get things moving is your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and the dealership you prefer working with.

Crystal

Clearly none of you have owned a late model Mustang...

I took the whole assembly off of my 2012 GT and had it painted.

Only the GT500 and some other "special" cars got the axle coating that the trucks get and even that will rust.

This never causes harm but is definitely an eye sore on an otherwise nice car.

That's how your axle came from the factory in your Mustang?

WTH...again, will it ever rust through...absolutely not. Not in our lifetimes. But I'd happily pay an extra $25 for my vehicle to be painted properly from the axle plant. Who makes/paints the Ford axles? Is it Sterling?

That's not my axle but most of the Mustang GT's look like that including mine before I painted it. Even then the rust started to show up in spots where the paint was thin.

Powder coating is really the only durable way to go IMO and the factory isn't going to provide that before assembly.

There seems to be many of us with this surface rust. Myself included as well as the showroom F-150 at my dealership (see pic).
I dont think there is any official stance from fors because its not an issue. Just from what I have gathered from threads here on the forum, if you bring it up to your dealer, they will most likely fix it. But ford is certainly not going to issue a tsb for it. You have to think, us enthusiasts here on the forum make up a small percentage of peers. We are not an accurate sample of the masses. Think of how many of the owners of the 700k f150s sold annually will never even crawl under their truck to notice something like this?

Leaving the diff unpainted is simply a cost cutting measure by ford. Say it would cost them $20 to coat each diff (which is probably conservative estimate on the low side) x 700,000 trucks, thats $14,000,000 of pure profit. Same thing with other "left-off" items that should be standard like wheel well liners.
