Default Replace and rekey center console?

Bought a console and got a new lock.

Has anyone removed the old lock?

Also has anybody rekeyed it or replaced it and keyed the new lock? The instructions that came with the lock aren't the best.

why replace the lock - console is plastic and being locked won't slow a thief down.

Most of the time you open the lid look at the bottom of lock you might be able to unbolt it. If you can then remove it take it to lock smith and have it rekeyed.

Was hoping to avoid going to a locksmith.

I have a new lock and the kit just instructions don't make much sense

And yes I know a lock won't really stop somebody but why not add a little extra protection.

Once you take off the plastic panel on the inside of the lid the lock is held in place with two screws if I remember correctly. You'll see once you remove the plastic panel. Pry gently around the perimeter and it snaps off. Note, when you operate the lever to open the lid you'll see two pieces on either end that retract and extent. You'll have to operate the lever to retract these pieces so you can get the plastic panel off as well.

Oh, and once you remove the plastic panel, you can access the metal plate that holds the lid to the hinge mechanism and then you can remove the whole lid assembly from the console.
